Nobly Born: An Illustrated History of the Knights Templar. Nobly Born: An Illustrated History of the Knights Templar. (Product Code: 211)
By Stephen Dafoe

The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, popularly known as the Knights Templar, was one of the most famous of the Christian military orders. It existed for about two centuries in the Middle Ages, created in the aftermath of the First Crusade of 1096 to ensure the safety of the large numbers of European pilgrims who flowed toward Jerusalem after its conquest. The Templars were an unusual order in that they were both monks and soldiers, making them in effect some of the earliest ‘warrior monks’ in the Western world. Members of the Order played a key part in many battles of the Crusades, and the Order's infrastructure innovated many financial techniques that could be considered the foundation of modern banking. The Order grew in membership and power throughout Europe, until it fell foul of King Philip IV of France, who caused members in France to be tortured into confessions and burned at the stake. Under the influence of King Philip, Pope Clement V then forcibly disbanded the order on Friday 13 October, 1307. In Nobly Born: An Illustrated History of the Knights Templar, noted expert Stephen Dafoe explores the order from its origins through to its dissolution in 1307. Individual chapters examine its origins and its formation in 1118, its rise to papal favour and power, its organisation and day-to-day life, preparation for battle and discipline, the major battles fought by the Templars (such as the Battle of Hattin on 4 July 1187) showing how they actually lost more battles than they won despite their fearsome reputation, the loss of Acre in 1291 that was the start of the process that led to the order’s eventual dissolution, the arrest of leading members of the order for unholy worship and heresy on 13 October 1307, the aftermath of the dissolution and, finally, the Templar legacy. Alongside the author’s well-researched and comprehensive text is a superb illustrative content, vividly portraying the life of the Templars during this remarkable period.
